The sedan chairs were the only means of transportation to the Hospital when it first opened in 1907. Since 1975 an annual Sedan Chair Race has been held and commemorates the practice of earlier days. From the outset the Sedan Chair Race was not to raise money for the new hospital buildings, but to attract people up to Matilda to see for themselves its facilities and magnificent location and funds raised were to be donated to local charities.

Sedan Chair Hire
Sedan Chairs are available for hire for various purposes such as exhibition, ceremonies and photo opportunities.
Any parties who is interested in hiring our chair as a special prop for photo shoots or display use, please call our staff at (or email: ) for further arrangement.
A hire charge of HKD1,000 per chair, per day is required as this money strictly goes to the Fund benefiting Hong Kong charities. For other terms and conditions please kindly read the following "Hire Form".
